Why we rescued 5-month-old Shar Pei, Oasis, renamed Oskana (a Tripod) |

|
Oskana Oye Ai Ai, was formerly named Oasis. On August 8th, 2008, Oskana was hit by a truck. Her owners could not afford the medical expenses. After attempting to treat her broken leg, Oskana developed serious complications and had to be treated for a herniated stomach, bladder, and intestines. Her first veterinary bill was $600, and three days later, she was treated for additional complications, which was $700. Three weeks later, I noticed an infection, and other complications which cost me an additional $260. Poor Oskana, now faces yet another surgery. The amount of leg that was left attached is not enabling her to re-learn how to walk like most tri-pods do. This “stump” will have to be removed. An estimate for this surgery will be anywhere from $2,200—$3,000. Needless to say, this five-month old Sha peis deserves a chance, and we’re doing everything we can to not only recover from her medical expenses but trying to raise enough to get this little baby girl completely independent again. Rest in Peace Oskana Oye Ai Ai
September 28, 2008:
This morning, I received the news that Oskana (Oye) passed away. Ernestine rushed her to the vet last night with a fever. It appears that this little puppy could not recover from the internal trauma that the original accident created.
As rescuers, we try to protect, save, nurture, and rehabilitate, and through all of these acts of kindness, we all experience moments of total darkness—that darkness can make us feel alone, defeated, helpless and beaten.
I’ve worked with many rescues over the past few years, and I believe it’s the acts of kindness from total strangers that brightens our darkest hours. It’s an email from a stranger, a donation from across the miles, or a post on a youtube video that says you are appreciated, that lifts us up a bit, until we can recover.
Losing Oskana is a major blow for this rescue, I hope it’s the love and kindness from strangers that proves that their work is valuable and admired.
Oskana held on for your love Ernestine. I saw her 2 days ago, and took her photos and videos. She was a happy puppy who was in love with you, and proud to be part of your pack. So while she will be missed, her last days were filled with family, love, security, and friendship. Oskana was special, and she knew it. |
